Africa holds 38,000 kilometres of coastline and almost no scientific infrastructure to tell us what is happening beneath it, NOMMI exists to change that. The National Ocean Microplastics Monitoring Initiative is Nigeria's first structured ocean microplastics monitoring programme, aligned with GESAMP and NOAA MDMAP global frameworks.Â
Operating through the Ocean Microplastics Monitoring Club (OMMC) at Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos, with representation from, OAU, Anchor University, Caleb British International Secondary School, Lekki etc. NOMMI deploys students and emerging researchers at the Frontline of environmental intelligence, equipping them with field methodology, scientific rigour and certificates endorsed by Youth Orientation for Development (YOD UNESCO)
On May 16th, 2026 NOMMI conducted its inaugural field session at ELEKO Beach, the first in Nigeria's history. The programme is guided by Mrs. Imogen Napper (plastic detective) marine scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory and one of the world's leading researchers on MICROPLASTICS POLLUTION, who also serves as a scientific advisor to NOMMI.
